Substitute for Yogurt in Smoothies

Yogurt is one of my favourite ingredients for smoothies.  However, I am aware that not everybody has the same taste, so if you are looking for a substitute for yogurt in smoothies, we have some great suggestions below.  Hopefully our suggestions will help you figure out how to make a smoothie without yogurt.

How to Make a Smoothie without Yogurt, Our Favorite Yogurt Alternatives for Smoothies!

1. Non-Dairy Milk

You can use non-dairy milk instead of yogurt.  You will get the same creamy taste and nutrients.  To get the same consistency of yogurt use less liquid.  There are a number of non-dairy milk alternatives, a few that come to mind are: Almond, Cashew, Soy, and  Coconut milk.

2. Almond Milk Yogurt

If you are looking for an alternative to normal yogurt, almond milk yogurt is a great non-dairy alternative.  Almond yogurt is just as thick and you have the same taste.  Almond yogurt can be purchased in a variety of flavors.  My favorite is vanilla which mimics the taste of vanilla yogurt perfectly.  If you are feeling ambitious you can make your own almond yogurt.

3. Other Nut Milk Yogurts

You can use pretty much any nut milk to make yogurt.  You will start to see these non-dairy alternatives cropping up more and more often.  Some nut milk yogurts that come to mind are cashew yogurt and hemp seed yogurt.

4. Coconut Milk yogurt

This is another alternative to yogurt.  Coconut yogurt is made with coconut milk and probiotics.  You get the same thick, creamy texture as normal yogurt.  You can make homemade coconut yogurt that is just as thick, creamy and tangy as the real thing.

5. Soy Yogurt

Soy yogurt has the same thick, creamy texture of normal yogurt.  Additionally, soy yogurt tastes more like the real thing.  If you are interested in making your own soy yogurt there is a nice homemade soy yogurt recipe listed here.

6. Oat Milk yogurt

Oat Milk is a product that has steadily been gaining popularity so it’s no surprise to see that oat milk yogurt is now commercially available.  Nancy’s yogurt offers a plant based non-dairy milk alternative that is gluten free.

7. Kefir

Everytime I think of Kefir I think of liquid yogurt.  It has the same taste as yogurt, the only difference is it is not as thick.  Kefir is a fermented drink that is made from cows, goat or sheep’s milk.  You can use plain or flavored Kefir in your smoothies.  If you are purchasing flavored kefir, some popular flavors are strawberry banana, mango, raspberry, and strawberry.

8. Chia Seeds

Chia seeds do not have the creamy smoothness of yogurt, however, chia seeds can act as a thickener for your smoothie.  If you soak chia seeds in liquid for a few minutes, the chia seeds become gelatinous in their texture.  Chia seeds are also high in omega-3 and protein.

9. Nuts

If you use nuts such as cashew nuts they give you a nice creamy flavour.  An added benefit is they are high in protein.

10. Nut butter

Nut butter is a good way to thicken your smoothies.  An added benefit of nut butters is they are high in protein and healthy fats.

11. Coconut Cream

Coconut cream is one of my favorite ingredients to add to smoothies.  Coconut cream is similar to coconut milk but it has less water.  Coconut cream combines well with such fruits as raspberries, peaches, blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, mangoes, watermelon, pineapple, papaya, and kiwi.

12. Baked Sweet Potato

Sweet potato is definitely not what you first think of when it comes to smoothies.  However, they are a great way to thicken your smoothie.  An added benefit is that sweet potatoes are rich in vitamin a.

13. Avocados

I am pretty sure that when you first saw avocado on our list you had your doubts.  However, avocado is a great way to thicken smoothies and you won’t taste it in your smoothie.  Avocados are also a healthy addition to your smoothie.  Avocados are a source of vitamins C, E, K, and B6, as well as riboflavin, niacin, folate, pantothenic acid, magnesium and potassium.

14. Bananas

Bananas are my favourite ingredients in smoothies.  A banana will help you to thicken a smoothie and get that creamy texture.

15. Tofu

Tofu is not something you usually think of when you think of smoothies.  However, it’s a great substitute for yogurt.  The texture of the tofu is similar to yogurt.  An added plus is tofu has a high protein content.
