How to make a smoothie

Making smoothies is simple.  If you are a beginner keep it simple; don’t get carried away!  The main benefit of smoothies is it is an easy way to get nutrient-rich foods in your diet.  Pick one vegetable product, one fruit product, a liquid, a sweetener if needed, a protein source and any other optional smoothie add ins.

Best Fruits for Smoothies

Try and pick fruits that are soft and naturally sweet.  Some fruits that come to mind are bananas, berries, mangoes, ripe pears and pineapples.

Fruits that disguise the green taste

If you don’t want your smoothies to taste like leafy greens stick to the 50:50 ratio of fruits to vegetables.

Our favourite fruits for disguising leafy greens are bananas, mangoes, pineapple, oranges (in the form of orange juice) and passion fruits (these might be a bit sour so you will have to add a sweetener).

Our favourite vegetables

There are a myriad of vegetables that you can add to your smoothies.  As you get comfortable with mixing smoothies you can gradually add other vegetables.  If you are a beginner these are our three favorites vegetables:  Kale, Spinach and Collard Greens.

Our favourite liquids

There are numerous liquids you can use for smoothies; however, my favourite liquid is simply water.

Sometimes you might want to thicken your smoothie; if this is the case use ice, yoghurt or bananas.

If you want to disguise the taste of greens consider adding liquids such as Kefir or Orange juice.  Another popular alternative for a smooth creamy taste is nut milks such as cashew or almond milk.

How to sweeten your smoothie

My favourite sweetener for smoothies are bananas, mangoes, fruit juice or honey.  Other sweeteners you can use are dates, cane juice, maple syrup, agave or stevia.

Conclusion

Smoothies are one of the best way to get your daily requirements of fruits and vegetables.  I am a great fan of smoothies and hopefully I have a few converts after reading the information above.  Happy Blending!!
