How to Make a Smoothie Sweeter, Our Best Sweetener for Smoothies!

Ripe Bananas

This is my favorite ingredient for sweetening smoothies.  The best type of banana are very ripe ones.

If you are just doing a personal smoothie one banana should be sufficient.

Bananas are the best way to make your smoothie taste like a fruit punch.  They are also a great way to alleviate the green, grassy taste of your vegetables.

One caveat if you are using other fruits such as mangoes or pineapple add them sparingly, you don’t want to make your smoothie too sweet.

Dates

Dates are my favorite dried fruit to use in my smoothies.  The surprising thing is you don’t really need a lot of dates to do the job.  You will find two or three dates will be sufficient.  If you want to make a smoothie that tastes like a chocolate milkshake try this recipe:

  • Almond milk
  • Cacao nibs
  • Hemp seed
  • Flax seeds
  • Dates
  • Honey

Figs and Prunes

These are two other dried fruits that can be used to sweeten smoothies.  An added benefit of dried fruits is you get extra vitamins and minerals.

Other Fruits

f you want to sweeten a smoothie, adding fruits is a great idea.  An  added benefit is you get a great array of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

Our favorite fresh fruit for sweeteners other than bananas are mangoes and pineapples.  If you don’t have access to mangoes or pineapples you can use frozen mangoes and pineapples. You can also try fruits such as cherries, papaya, frozen peaches, blackberries, raspberry, or blueberries.

Honey

This is another natural sweetener you can use in your smoothie.  Remember though a little goes a long way.  If you ever find you get carried away with your smoothie ingredients and it tastes awful.  A little honey will make it taste great

Fruit Juices

You can use fruit juices instead of water in your smoothies.  My favorite fruit juice for smoothies is orange juice.

Cane Juice

Cane juice and lime is one of my favourite drinks.  Add some green veggies and this makes the perfect drink.

Molasses

Molasses is a great addition to a smoothie since it has a lot of iron and minerals.  The only thing is molasses has a very strong taste so some people might not find the taste palatable.

Coconut Sugar

Coconut sugar is sometimes referred to as coconut palm sugar.  This sugar comes from the sap of the coconut palm tree. The sap is mixed with water, and then boiled until it crystallizes into granules that look like sugar.  You can learn more about coconut sugar here.

Maple Syrup

Yes this is the same maple syrup used on your pancakes! Maple is produced from the xylem sap of sugar, red, or black maple trees.  .

Maple trees are tapped by drilling holes in the tree trunk and collecting the saps.  You can learn more about the health benefits of maple syrup here.

Stevia

Stevia is a sugar substitute made from the leaves of the stevia plant.  I personally have never used this sweetener for smoothies but it can be used.

Stevia is reputed to be 100 to 300 times sweeter than sugar.  Webmd has a great article about stevia that you can read for a more in depth analysis.

Agave Nectar

Agave nectar is a fluid that comes from inside the blue agave plant.  An interesting fact is this is the same plant that is used to make tequila.  You can read about how agave is produced here.

Heathline also has an interesting article about agave and its benefits and drawbacks.  You can have a look here.

Monk fruit sweetener

The monk fruit is a round, small fruit grown in Asia.  The sweetener is created from the fruit by collecting the juice, which is then dried into a concentrated powder.  You can learn more about the monk fruit in this healthline article.
